“Welcome to the revolution. The elites have exposed their hand. They have shown they have nothing to offer. They can destroy but they cannot build. They can repress but they cannot lead. They can steal but they cannot share. They can talk but they cannot speak. [...] They have no ideas, no plans, and no vision for the future.”
- Chris Hedges
We need to revolt.
And we have the power and authority to do so.
It is the perfect time to take a deep dive into the rules of authority itself. The time to understand the rules is right now. It is necessary.
Why is the time now? Because we need it now.
We have allowed a few elites to rule us and they are - to put it mildly - not leaders. It is time to change that leadership. And we can do just that.
The power to change everything is sitting right at our feet. We only have to take one single step - which is to reach out and embrace it. We can even look at it.
Can you see it? It is sitting right in front of our eyes. It is called democracy. “Government by the people; especially: rule of the majority”.
I cannot dispute it. That would involve arguing with a dictionary! Who would argue with a dictionary? Not me. I will accept it as written.
Look at the definition again to emphasize the key operative point: The majority rules. The majority has all the authority. We already have the power and we already have the authority!
We do not have to build it. We already have it!
What we have to do is embrace it. Me standing alone has no power. You standing alone has no power. But - us standing together ignites and fires up the power. When we stand united, we are the authority.
Unity is the lifeblood of democratic power. Unity is democracy’s oxygen. To engage and wield the power of democracy we have to unite. Together we have all the power we need to be free, to be liberated, and to determine the direction of our societies, our communities, and our lives. That is what self-determination means.
Together we have the power and the authority to make all the decisions we want. We can not only dream of the world we want - we are free to have the world we dream of. Those who have the authority have the power.
Engaging the power of democracy elevates each of us by elevating all of us. Every voice gets heard, every issue gets discussed, and every action step taken and decision made is decided by the majority among us. That is how democracy works.
There is no complexity, difficulty or challenge to overcome. And there is only one requirement: We just have to stand together!
Let’s get our asses in gear and stand together! We can chart our futures together when we come together. Our revolution only requires one action: that we stand together. Everything else comes to us. A revolution of unity.
Standing together is also not complicated. It merely requires organizing ourselves so we are together. Organize. Place ourselves together. And feel the surge of democratic power come into our hands. The future is ours. Let’s put ourselves together and chart out our future.
Division is our enemy. Division - and those that foster division - is who we revolt against. It is they that represents the kryptonite that keeps the authority of democracy resting powerless at our feet - keeping it just out of our reach. Division renders democracy to be lifeless. Reject division.
Division is what we revolt against. Unity is what we revolt for.
Embrace each other. We need to get our strength from the common ground that we all share. Our shared dreams. We have so much more common ground than we have division. We all want peace, equity, justice, fairness, and equal opportunity. We all want a clean environment, clean air, clean water and to be treated with respect.
We all want a safe and secure future for our kids and the generations that follow them. We all want our societies to be enriched with communities that are vibrant and flourish. The list of what we all want is endless.
We are all individuals and we have our issues, beliefs, and opinions that divide us. But those divisions are few. The commonalities we share far and away exceed the issues that divide us. We need to respect that we have our individual differences and to unite around the common ground that we share.
If we don’t, we will fail to engage the power and authority that democracy offers us. Democracy will remain powerless at our feet. We will fail to pick it up.
How many of us find the status quo acceptable? How many of us find our current situation and trajectories to be on the path we want to be on? They aren’t and they stink - and we all know it. So … let’s get off our asses and unite and send ourselves in the direction we want to go!
We have the power and we have the authority. Reach down and pick it up!!!
Our current democratic institutions are broken beyond repair - we acknowledge that.
As we unite, we engage our power and our authority. We will determine - together - who represents us in our political institutions. We will do that on a community-by-community basis. And we will select our representatives from among us for who will best represent us where our interests reach beyond our communities. We will do these things - because we can.
We recognize the failures of our corporate media outlets, our biased legal systems, and our corrupted corporate and economic systems. These too are dysfunctional.
As we unite, we will - among ourselves - have the power and authority to replace and re-design these dysfunctional institutions. The power and authority to change them all will come to us because we have selected to stand together and take on the task of changing them.
Nefarious Forces
Our democracy is being stolen. There is a theft-in-progress. The global corporate elite have taken the controls of the institutions of our society - and have imposed their will to satisfy their own interests. They have a complete disregard for the people that the institutions were designed to serve and represent.
Public funds - representing taxpayer contributions - are directed away from the public services required and channelled to this corporate elite. Laws, regulations, and their enforcement have all been marginalized to create a ‘wild west’ environment granting complete immunity from accountability to this corporate elite.
Who is this global corporate elite? Suffice to say that it consists of large global corporations and bankers that are controlled by the ultra-wealthy - the percentage of the population commonly termed as “the 1%”.
This 1% group of corporate elites have commandeered the institutions of our society for their own personal motives - which are motives entrenched in greed and the economic ideology of infinite profit growth at levels that are never satisfied and know no end. All of this comes at the expense of the rest of us (the 99% that fall outside of this 1% elite population). The 1% do not create their wealth and power - they take their wealth and power from us. We are measured as commodities and units of production. There is a complete absence of humanity to it.
We all see this, we all experience it, and we all know it. Polling results consistently show that the levels of trust in our politicians, our media, our legal system, and our corporations are at rock bottom levels. We all know and recognize that our institutions are severely broken.
In the pursuit of their endless drive for increased profits, the 1% have presented us with their offer to construct a society in a form that meets their needs. They have told us that “we will own nothing and we will be happy”. They are not quiet or shy about it - they have actually presented us with their “proposal”.
Unacceptable. We refuse to cooperate. We refuse their offer. Right?
The problem here is that they refuse to accept our rejection. They ignore us. They ignore the will of the majority of us. They have rejected democracy because democracy does not comply with their wishes. So, they proceed anyway - proceeding without our consent and without any authority. Have you consented? I haven’t. None of us have. That means they do not have the authority of majority approval.
We have refused their offer, so they feel they can just take it anyway. They have helped themselves to our institutions, our politicians, our media, our economy, our justice system, our natural environment, and our very lives. They have organized themselves and they have initiated a strategy that will take it by any means necessary. These arrogant, entitled, and callous individuals feel they can force their will on us. They refuse to accept our “no”.
Let’s ask ourselves a question: Why have they put in all this effort and organization in order to take it? The answer is simple: Because they have no authority to do so. They literally have to steal it from us.
It is the theft of our democratic liberty and freedom. Their theft is active, underway, and in-progress. This theft is underway and it has been underway for a while. They are actually stepping up their pace and are close to pulling off their crime.
We have to stop them before they complete their crime and we lose our recourse to shut them down. Dammit - they will re-write the dictionary to change the rules!
We do not want to live in their vision of the world order. That would be a nightmare scenario for us all. We have to stop this crime-in-progress which is the theft of our freedom and liberty of self-determination. It is the theft of our democracy and our democratic powers and authority.
Up until now, they have pretty well had one thing going in their favor: Our apathy. Our failure to nurture, maintain, and protect the democratic powers we have at our disposal. They are literally stealing our democracy right out from under us.
We are asleep. And that is what has given them the opportunity they needed. It is time for us all to wake up and thwart this crime before we no longer have the power to do so. It is time to wake up and assert our ownership rights to our freedom, liberty, and future. Wakey wakey time.
If we choose to wake up, this is a glorious opportunity for us all. Where we, our communities, and our societies go are up to us to decide. It is our choice; not the choice of the 1% of those among us.
There is a wonderful silver lining here. The 1% have woken us up to take our own action - to actually decide our futures and to chart our own course and direction. We have the opportunity to not only reject the 1%, but to create the future that we all dream of and know is possible. We can end up much better off. We have been woken up to take on the one task democracy requires of us - to take on our civic responsibility.
What do we want? We want rights to the basics of life secured for each of us. Housing, food, water, healthcare, and a clean healthy safe environment to live in would be great for starters. We want meaningful and respectful employment. We want fairness and justice. We want equal opportunities for each of us. We want our communities to be vibrant and to thrive. We want to be free and we want to be respected as the individuals we all are.
Well, this is our opportunity for all of it. Yes, we need to formally and completely purge out the 1% and rid ourselves of their curse. We need to reject their nefarious intentions to enslave us all with their monetary measurements of life in order to ingratiate themselves with complete power and authority over us. We will do that because we can and we have the power to do so. And - by doing so - we realize that this also gives us the opportunity to reset our lives.
This is the time for our awakening.
We need to put on our rebellion hats and get two things done:
We need to stop the crime-in-progress and formally purge the 1% from the institutions of our society; and
We need to build the new society we have always wanted and imagined.
Only our apathy is holding us back. Our apathy is manifested in our failure to undertake our civic responsibilities and that is what is giving the 1% the opportunity to steal our democracy - and our own self-determination with it. Our apathy is fatal.
We have rejected the vision the 1% has offered us. They have not taken kindly to our rejection of their offer, so they are now insisting on it like a 2-year toddler having a hissy-fit. Fine - we will remove them with the powers and authority we have. Our revolution is how we go about that.
We are going to revolt. We are going to unite. We are going to occupy democracy and remove ourselves from the straitjacket of our own apathy and engage the powers we - still - have. And together we will chart the course of our own vision for our future. We can do this. But we have to unite and leave our complacent cocoon that has wrapped us in our own apathy. Democracy requires us to organize our power. So … we will organize.
This removal of the unauthorized 1% from dictating their terms on our society is only the first part. The second part of this journey gives us our future - and places it directly into our hands.
The removal of the 1% from our institutions - along with their enablers - is going to create a whole lot of empty institutions. They will still be there, but they will be empty. We are going to have to restore them. This is where we are blessed. We will have an empty slate to work with so we can build them back in the form we want.
We will have our own “Build Back Better” initiative. Since we will be completely organized - which removing the 1% entails - we will all be civically engaged so we can quickly come together to decide how our new societies, communities, and lives will be designed. We will be united and organized to start the process of changing everything!
This is a wonderful opportunity. We will live the dream we all share.
The Revolution
We are led to believe that there are safety regulations and checks and balances within our governments and institutions designed to prevent reckless, harmful, and even criminal behaviors that are unfolding around us. At minimum - we should expect to hold the 1% to account for their actions when they violate basic human rights. Well, apparently that is not the case. The 1% have gutted and emptied out all the checks and balances that would limit their activities to pursue their monetary profits and have them held to account for the damages and harm they create on the way.
When our governments and institutions fail us on such basic levels there is only one course of action we must take. It is time to revolt!
If you are reading this, you know that this shift of power is necessary or - at minimum - you have a gut feeling that something has to change. You know it is time. All of us do. It is time to revolt!
Welcome to the revolution! Welcome to your revolution! Welcome to our revolution!
We can do this. We must.
This is about power. Technically, we hold all the power. Democracy ingratiates the power to us. However, the 1% elite have taken on a concerted, organized, and determined effort to usurp our power for themselves. And they are close to finalizing their nefarious theft of power. It is through our own civic complacency that we have opened the doors for the 1% to even attempt this theft.
Yes, the 1% are close to completing their theft of our democracy - taking unauthorized control over our societies, our communities, and our institutions for themselves. But “close to completing” is not a final state - not yet. We might be a little late to the party, but we still have a window of opportunity to stop this theft-in-progress. The power of our democracy remains in our hands for now. What we need to do is assert our ownership of this power before that window closes on us.
We have the power; we have to activate and engage it. Democracies do not offer power to any individual - they provide power to the majority of individuals organized under the umbrella of a community. That requires one simple action from us: We have to unite ourselves and our voices to fire up and engage the power we have available to us. We have to organize our communities.
As we engage, we will have two “superpowers” to leverage: (1) the power of our vote, and (2) the power of our labor. Both of these superpowers do not accrue to any individual - you or me alone hold no power. Only by uniting with others do these superpowers manifest to us. The more of us that unite, the more power they give us. Every single one of us possesses the additive energy to add to our overall community power. That energy is stored equally in each of us - but standing alone it is only power at rest. it is unleashed in the very moment that we join together.
Our revolution is about unifying ourselves to unleash those powers that we have. The approach is non-violent but it requires proactive action. It requires a movement to active civic engagement - which is the lifeblood and the energy source that ignites and fires up our superpowers. It is only our apathy towards civic engagement that is the kryptonite to diffuse our superpowers and has opened the doors for the 1% to steal our powers for themselves. It is time to rise up, proactively engage, slam that door shut, and enforce our democratic rights and authorities that our power gives us.
The 1% corporate elite have weaknesses - many of them. They have fears. They know very well that our assertion of power will cause their ambitions to fail. They fear our power. They have weaknesses that are primarily rooted in their own (lack of) moral character. Their greed and motives are focused on only one metric - economic profit growth. They are pure corporate capitalists - completely void of any positive character traits. Their path is the destruction of everything and everyone of us for the sole purpose to extract every penny of profit from us. They themselves do not create their wealth and power. Every penny of wealth and power they take comes at our expense.
Capitalism is not a community-oriented ideology - it is a purely economic ideology. It is rooted in monetary profit maximization at all costs with a complete disregard for inclusiveness, decency, fairness, justice, equity, empathy and compassion. It is about monetary profit and profit alone. And it is cancerous in its manifestation. Just like cancer will pursue its endless growth until it completely consumes its host that nourishes its very existence, the capitalistic ideology of the elite will consume us and every resource on this planet until there is nothing left. It is an insatiable ideology that is infinite - it has no brakes that brings it to a halt. Only an intervention is the cure to that cancer - and we are that intervening cure. The intervention needed is a revolution.
The 1% has one mission: Consume every resource to maximize their wealth and power. Their mantra is infinite profit growth on a finite resource. Their mission is based on failed math; and a failed direction that ultimately leads to their own demise because they will eventually consume each other (there is no evidence that the 1% are smart). Their mission is their biggest weakness and we can exploit it.
We need to unify ourselves to engage our two superpowers. Their efforts have no legal democratic authority. Our democratic rights to self-determination will cancel their efforts because we determine the rules and laws and can direct their enforcement. We have that authority. Our labor is required for them to derive their precious profits. The withholding of our labor stops their insatiable drive for profits dead in its tracks. We have that authority. Our two superpowers are our weapons. If we choose to unite and engage them. And we must.
Remember that we need to reject our own apathy. That is what has allowed this cancer to infect our democracy. Civic engagement is democracy’s immune system and - in this case - is also democracy’s cure. Civic engagement will reject this cancer and restore the health of our democracy. It will give us the power to choose how we live our lives.
It is time to reject our own apathy and engage to assert our power and defeat the cancer that the 1% has placed on our lives.
Our revolution is a call for every one of us to wake up to our civic responsibility and to unite and organize ourselves to restore our democracy back to health. It is a call for us all to meet at our “Town Hall” together. Our revolution presents an engagement action based on a blend of civic action, assertive tactics, and historical precedence. We must organize to unite as a community of people - because it is unification that engages our superpowers. It is our power if we stand together. We have that authroity to do so. So … let’s stand together and assert our authority. Let's gather together at our Town Hall.
The geographic scope of our action is focused on the democratic, legal, and economic systems of Canada and the United States of America - but it is transferable to all developed democracies that are experiencing the same scourge.
The 1% weaponized themselves through the deployment of massive global corporations that operate worldwide. This war is fought on a global battlefield and scale. The direct focus on Canada and the US is solely a reflection of my own knowledge and exposure to the Canadian and American political, economic, legal, and societal systems. Our action will be to keep it open to be readily transportable to all democratic societies. We are all victims of this global metastatic cancer infestation.
This is a war - a class war. We need to mobilize ourselves for this war so we can win it. That requires strategies and tactics that reflect a war environment. Our strategies and tactics are not based on violence and destruction - they are only based on organizing ourselves because that is what is required of us. But we do need to organize in a way that is effective and targeted and designed to inflict damage on the enemy. We need to neutralize the weapons they are wielding against us. That means we need to understand our enemy - their motives, their plans, their strategies and their tactics.
We need to assess their strengths so we can effectively anticipate their tactics and successfully defend against them. We need to assess their weaknesses so we can effectively exploit them. We need to understand the weapons we have at our disposal. We need to develop and execute strategies and tactics that lead us to victory. This is a war. A class war. And we are in it to win it.
Always keep in mind that we have the moral high ground here. We did not initiate this conflict - our democratic authority and rights have been attacked and we must defend ourselves from that attack. We have the advantage of our numbers - we are the majority. They represent 1%, while we represent 99%. The numbers are not even close (and the 1% knows this by the way). We have the authority because democracy gives us that authority. We are not thrusting new ideals and authorities onto society - we are engaging the ideals and authorities that are already in-place. Good grief! Our authority is outlined in the dictionary!
We have the powers, the authority, and the moral high ground. And we have each other.
The focus of our revolution is on uniting and organizing ourselves for this war. The battles are numerous - and everyone has ideas. But - one thing is consistent across every idea - they will require us to be united and organized as one powerful voice so every one of those ideas has the opportunity to succeed and to move us closer to victory. Our mission is to get us united and organized - so that every battle we take on we will win.
We Will Own Our Futures
We are not revolting to simply remove the 1% from our lives. We are revolting to build and realize our dreams!
Let’s envision what our victory will look like.
By unifying into one loud and organized force, we will apply the required cure that restores and heals our democracy. What does a healthy democracy give us? It gives us the power that liberates us and gives us the freedom to determine our society’s future. That is what a healthy democracy gives us. I will say it again: That is what self-determination means!
We will have a lot of work to do after we purge the 1% from our lives. With their removal, our revolution will deliver us a pristine but very empty infrastructure of democratic institutions. That gives us a clean canvas to work from and to paint our futures upon.
Wouldn’t that be fantastic? What a glorious future we face in front of us! Yes, we will have a lot of work to do - but the work will be about building our future - and we will all be doing that work together.
Our democratic institutions will be vacant awaiting a new set of representatives that truly represent their communities. Our mainstream media outlets will be empty screens, silent sounds, and blank pages awaiting the arrival of ethical and responsible journalists. Our legal systems will be waiting for a new set of revised laws that are rooted in justice, fairness, and equity and leveraged with vibrant enforcement authority.
Our parks and natural spaces will be quiet from the continuous roar of the machinery of extraction. Our vacant buildings will be filled with the lives of those previously denied shelter. Our schools will spring to life as funding and people-driven curriculums invigorates and empowers their learning culture. Our prisons will become less crowded as those held unjustly are liberated. Our inner cities will feel a vibrancy awaiting the energy for people to invigorate them into communities. Our health facilities will once again focus on the care and well being of their patients. War and conflict will be replaced with peace and cooperation. There will be a calm as despair is lifted, and there will be an energy as our communities bustle into life.
And we will all be together. Our revolution will have succeeded and we will have a lot of work to do. We will gather with each other and chart our paths forward. Paths will be charted at the local community level, and broader issues will filter up. Yes, decisions for each community will be made at the local community levels, and those requiring broader consensus will filter up. Policy direction will filter up from the community level instead of being mandated by unelected political authorities down to the communities! Sounds completely backwards, doesn’t it? But I am sure we can all agree that it is a much better alternative than what we have been experiencing.
Every idea will be heard. Every policy idea will be considered. Actions will form around majority consensus. Everybody gets to participate and be heard. Our infrastructure and institutions will spring into life to bring everything the majority decides upon to become the reality.
The threats we face from global heating and an endless trajectory of war and no peace will be addressed. The military budgets will be slashed as the investments in war and conflict will transition to investments in peace and cooperation.
Basic human rights will be liberated from the violence of poverty with guaranteed minimum incomes that permit dignity. Tax reform will eliminate massive income disparity and reflect economic justice. The creative arts will flourish and culturally enrich every community. Our political houses will be filled with cooperation and an urgency to implement laws and regulations that ensure the safety of every person, every community, and our natural environment. Corporations too big to fail will be dismantled and spun into manageable ventures. Workplaces will be revived with employee ownership across cooperatives that no longer set monetary profit as their sole guiding force. Our communities will become our homes surrounded by our neighbors engaging with each other.
Freedom and liberty will come to every one of us. We will embrace the freedom and liberty rights of our neighbors - because we recognize that if our neighbors cannot be free then none of us are truly free. Freedom and liberty will be reflected and embraced in the communities we live in.
This is all doable. Because it is ours. On every single issue; the math is simple. One person is one equal vote. The majority is defined as 50% + 1 on any matter. That is how decisions are made in our democracy.
Our leaders will be us. Organizers will shine the path forward. They will be guides and facilitators selected from among our communities and be representative of our communities. They will report to their citizens and be tasked to deliver the actions presented by the majority of the people. They will reflect the responsibility and guidance required to keep people, their communities, and their environment healthy, vibrant, and safe. And the people have the authority to replace any political representative - from among candidates they themselves select. There will no longer be political candidates thrusted upon them by an unelected arbitrary central political party establishment. Political party establishments will no longer exist.
The list of what has to be done is endless. The challenge will be for the people to gather together and decide what is on that list. The people will decide because that is how free people do it in a democracy.
We Need You & You Need Us
It is my hope and intent that this provides a motivation for you - and every one of us - to rise up and join the rest of us. To unite with each other so that we can determine and chart out our futures. It is my hope that you will join with your neighbors and together we can move together as one community that empowers equity, justice, freedom, respect, compassion, liberty, and peace. It is my hope that you participate in deciding what our future will become.
What we dream our futures to be is not a dream if we make it the reality. We can make it the reality by all uniting with each other. It really is that basic. We have the same dream. It is a good dream.
Many of us are standing in our own little bubbles - aware that we need to act; yet not acting. But let me make one thing clear: We must get our act together before the blight of this cancer on our freedom consumes us and takes away our right to determine our futures - which it is actively intent on taking.
If we choose to remain on the sidelines; feeling that false sense of security that staying in our little bubbles of existence makes us cling to - then the 1% will succeed in their theft and hold power over us and our futures will be dire. The 1% are not compassionate, empathetic, just, or reasonable people. They are criminals. They are monsters. Humanity is not a consideration to them. They are taking our right to self-determination away from us, because they want to dictate what our futures are. They want to exploit us for our labor in order to enable their insatiable pursuit of profit. Their methods are methods of pure exploitation and extraction for the sole purpose of monetary profits. Let’s tell them “NO!” and let's make sure they hear us!
We all have our own fears and hesitations. A lot of them have been placed upon us intentionally. But we must rise above those fears - each one of us needs to find that grain of courage that lies within each of us to remove the hesitation of taking that first step.
What are the steps on the path we have to take? That is up to all of us to decide. But we can only do that by taking the first step.
I can promise you that every step you take after that intimidating first step will become so much easier because you will no longer be standing alone. You will be taking every subsequent step with someone else - an individual just like you walking directly to the left side of you - and another to the right side of you. And so many more surrounding you in every direction. That is the power of unification. You will feel that energy - that energy of the very power that democracy gives us. You will feel it. It will energize you and it will energize us all. Our democracy will be freed from its cancer and its health will have sprung back to life.
We need you. You need me. We need each other. That is how our communities will flourish and grow.
We already have come a long way to becoming the unified force we need to be. A long way. We have activist groups by the thousands among us and they are varied across size, geography, and purpose. Let’s face it - each of our activist groups all face the same enemy: The 1% who have commandeered our institutions, media, and politicians for their own profit-motivated agenda. Human rights activists face the same exact enemy as do environmental activists, social justice activists, economic justice activists, political activists, and many others.
We need all of these activist groups to unite into one voice now. Right now. Our combined victory will offer each activist group the path to addressing their mission. The strength of thousands of groups and the thousands of individuals that make up their organizations will be a very powerful force. All their objectives will be finally heard, discussed, considered, and addressed. Remove the common blight that fails each of them and we gain the power we need to fix them all.
We need to unify into one group, one voice. We need to focus on restoring the powers of the democracy that we own. We need to fire up our superpowers so we win this class war. We must rise up. All of us. This is a class war - it is a war placed on us (the 99%) by the corporate elite (the 1%).
It is time to take that first step. That first step is to organize so we ignite the power we have. We will determine every next step together.
Welcome to your revolution. We all go together. We will win this class war and restore our freedom and liberty to self-determine our future. We are good for it. And we can do it. Because we go and do it together. It is time to rise up. We go together. We win this together.
“There are no excuses left. Either you join the revolt or you stand on the wrong side of history.
“You either taste, feel , and smell the intoxication of freedom and revolt, or sink into the miasma of despair and apathy. You are either a rebel or a slave.”
Chris Hedges
